`Genuine' ryot suicide cases 799: Revenue Secretary
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The Government has disputed the figures released by the TDP on ryot suicide deaths saying that a large number of the cases cited by the party are "not genuine."
Without referring to the TDP, V.P. Jauhari, Principal Secretary, Revenue, told reporters here on Thursday that the number of `genuine suicides' since May 14 last was 799. Ex-gratia and other benefits were paid to affected families in 702 cases.
Earlier, a TDP delegation led by G. Sukhender Reddy, and accompanied by about 50 widows of suicide victims, told the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, that 2,771 farmers had committed suicide in the last one year.
Mr. Jauhari insisted that Government figures were correct as information was collected through a scientifically monitored system, including district-level helplines.
