Law soon to rein in private moneylenders

HYDERABAD: The Government is planning to shortly introduce a law to control lending by private moneylenders and rate of interest charged by them. This move is being contemplated since the heavy debt burden has been found as main cause of suicides by farmers.

The Principal Secretary, Revenue, V.P. Jauhari, told reporters here on Thursday that the proposed bill would restrict interest rate to 12 per cent. - Special Correspondent

All-party meet on Maharashtra's action

HYDERABAD: An all-party meeting will be convened shortly on the action to be taken by the Government regarding illegal construction of 12 barrages on the Godavari by Maharashtra.

This was conveyed by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekahra Reddy, to TDP leaders who met him in Secretariat on Thursday following their visit to Babli on Wednesday, the site of one such barrage.

Construct houses for weavers, says CPI

HYDERABAD: The CPI has urged the Government to release funds for construction of houses for weavers, which have been stopped recently. In a statement issued here on Thursday, the CPI assistant secretary, K. Narayana, said that 10,000 houses were sanctioned for weavers.

The Commissioner, Handlooms and Textiles, had issued a letter and identified beneficiaries but construction was stopped on the plea that Government funds had not been released. - Staff Reporter

Varavara Rao clarifies

HYDERABAD: The former CPI(Maoist) emissary, Varavara Rao, on Thursday clarified that he had never expressed regrets to a dentist in the context of his letters to Maoist leaders. Referring to a news item published in these columns, Mr. Rao said he had only regretted his remarks made against a cardiac surgeon, an income-tax officer and two journalists. - Special Correspondent

Bid to outrage

girl's modesty

Sangareddy: Two women assisted a man in the alleged rape of a minor girl in Rayalamadugu village of Narayankhed mandal on Thursday.

According to the Narayankhed police, Begari Ramulu along with his wife, Balamma, and another woman, Buchamma, dragged a 15-year-old girl of the same village into their residence. While the women bolted the door and waited outside, Ramulu tried to outrage girl's modesty.

Hearing the cries of the girl, neighbours arrived at the scene and saved the girl. The trio succeeded in escaping from the village.

The police are on the lookout for them. - Staff Reporter

Woman poisons children, ends life

KARIMNAGAR: Unable to face poverty and husband's harassment, a woman along with her two children reportedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide in Narayanapur of Sultanabad mandal on Wednesday night.

The police said B. Tirupathamma (35) administered pesticide to her daughter, Srilatha (10), and son, Srinivas (6).

After confirming that they were dead, she also consumed the pesticide. - Staff Reporter

MRPS stages dharna

ADILABAD: Activists of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti on Thursday staged a dharna at the Collectorate demanding that the Government pressurise the Centre for implementation of SC categorisation.

Slogan-shouting activists later shifted the venue to Police Parade grounds where the asset distribution programme in connection with Praja Patham was under way.

A delegation of the agitators was allowed to submit a memorandum to the Social Welfare Minister, D.S. Redya Naik. - Staff Reporter

Houses sanctioned for fire victims

KURNOOL: Victims of the fire at Chityala village in Krishnagiri mandal were sanctioned houses under the IAY. The Minister, Konatala Ramakrishna, M. Mareppa, and the MLA, Sujathamma visited the village on Thursday and consoled the victims. Sixty seven houses were gutted and farmers lost everything, including agriculture implements. - Staff Reporter

Property lost in fire at four places

NELLORE: Property worth more than Rs. 1.50 lakhs has been lost in four fire mishaps in the district. At Gokulapalli village of Allur mandal, a house and haystacks were gutted due to short circuit of electricity. At Kodavalur, a house was gutted due to careless smoking. At Inamadugu village of Kovur mandal, two thatched houses were gutted while at Cheekavolu village of Sydapuram mandal, more than 200 heaps of haystacks were gutted after the material came in touch with electricity wires. - Staff Reporter

1.29 lakh mandays created

NELLORE: The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, has said that during the Praja Patham, a record number of 1.29 lakh mandays have been created for the benefit of poorer sections of society.

He told a review meeting at the ZP meeting hall here on Thursday that under employment generation programme, works worth Rs. 1.82 crores were sanctioned and 408 works grounded. Staff Reporter

Five hurt in mishap

NELLORE: Five persons suffered injuries -- two of them seriously -- when an autorickshaw in which they were travelling overturned at Kavali on Wednesday evening. The seriously injured were rushed to Nellore.
