CHENNAI: EDS, a $21 billion technology services company, has decided to broad base its offerings from India in the application service business. It will add the retail industry segment to its portfolio of services that now comprises telecom, financial services and manufacturing. EDS, according to Iain Blacklaw, vice-president of service delivery for Asia Pacific, "is looking at India seriously as a centre of service excellence in delivery.'' In an interaction with presspersons here on Friday, he said India was a critical component of EDS's new global delivery model (GDM), which aimed at consolidating its position in application delivery. The move for doubling of headcount (now it stands at 2,200) in India was in line with this thinking. Much of the job additions would be done in Chennai and Pune. Meanwhile, Abhay Gupte, Managing Director of Indian operations of EDS, has been assigned an expanded role. He will now be responsible for software development centres in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore also. The move comes even as EDS is putting in place a GDM in lieu of global solution centre model as the new operation model for application delivery.
