New traffic signal system in Kollam

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Pedestrians and motorists here will heave a sigh of relief when an automatic and synchronised solar traffic-signal system will be commissioned at the Chinnakada point next week. Keltron Ltd. is installing the system.

The Chinnakada point witnesses traffic congestion during a good part of the day.

Though many policemen are deployed for regulating traffic there, traffic jams are rampant. Pedestrians and motorists often find it difficult to wriggle out of the situation.

The Assistant Manager of Keltron (Traffic Signals), S. Jayakumar, told The Hindu that with the installation of the signal system, vehicles coming from any direction would be able to pass through Chinnakada point without getting caught in a traffic jam.

LED, microprocessor

The lights were LED (light emitting diode) based and operated by a microprocessor.

The processor would enable the system to automatically convert itself to the requirement of different traffic situations.
