Rail workers go on strike

Protest over officer's suspension

ALLAHABAD: Angry over the suspension today of a senior Railway officer, who carried out checking in an AC first class compartment of a train in which some MPs were travelling last month, Railway employees here went on a lightening strike disrupting the movement of trains.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Allahabad, A K Singh, who had checked the MPs travelling in the Rajdhani Express was suspended today on the charges of carrying out an inspection at a late hour and also allowing media persons to enter the compartment in which they were travelling on April 29, North Central Railway spokesman R.P. Shrivastava said here. Singh was transferred to Varanasi after the incident. Shrivastava claimed that the working at the station and other offices which were disrupted at around 1 pm resumed following an assurance by the General Manager IPS Anand that their grievances would be conveyed to the concerned authorities.

Traffic on Delhi-Howrah route hit

Rail services on the Delhi-Howrah trunk route were paralysed for more than two hours today following the strike.

Normal traffic on the route was restored after two hours following intervention by top railway officials. Sources said all trains passing through Allahabad and Kanpur under the North Central Railway were halted at several stations due to non-cooperation of railway employees. However, after intervention by the railway high-ups, the traffic blockade was cleared.

The prominent trains including Delhi-Howarh Kalka Mail, Jodhpur Express, Delhi Janata Express, Lal Qila Express, North East Express were running an hour late due to blockade.
