VIJAYAWADA: The Minister for Cooperation, Kanna Lakshminarayana, has stressed the need for the party's rank and file to educate the people about the different programmes being launched by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy-led Congress Government for their welfare. Participating at a meeting organised here on Friday to mark the completion of the first year of the Congress Government, the Minister lamented that in addition to the opposition Telugu Desam Party, a section of the "TDP-friendly" media had made it a habit to spread false propaganda against the Chief Minister. While the Government initiated several programmes for the welfare of different sections of the society, the poor and downtrodden in particular, the TDP-friendly media was trying to point out lapses and attribute motives to them to defame the Government. The party was, therefore, left with no other option but to rely on its rank and file to educate the people about the measures being launched for their welfare. Referring to the one-year rule of the Congress under Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy, he said that various programmes like free power to the farm sector, waiver of Rs. 1,400 crores power dues of farmers, housing and distribution of lands to eligible poor were successfully implemented. The meeting was presided over by the VGTM-UDA Chairman, Malladi Vishnu. The Congress legislators -- Vangaveeti Radhakrishna (Vijayawada East) and Nadendla Manohar (Tenali) and other senior Congress leaders also spoke.
