Transport workers seek pay hike

Agitators stage demonstration; pension scheme also sought


TIRUNELVELI: Transport workers, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress, staged a demonstration in front of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation depot on the south bypass road here on Saturday.

Led by L. Gurusamy of the trade union, the protestors raised slogans, urging the TNSTC administration and the State Government to give a pay hike of Rs.2,000 to all the transport employees as the wage settlement talks were yet to begin.

While giving-up the pension scheme presently in force for the transport workers, the Government should introduce the pension scheme being followed in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

Besides extending medical assistance to the retired transport workers, the Government should give bus pass to the people, who accompany the former employees. Medical assistance should be extended to the retired workers also, they said.
