We cooperate with India on peace strategy: U.S.

Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON: The United States is cooperating with India on a global strategy of peace and defence, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has told the Senate Appropriations Committee. "The U.S.-led global war on terrorism has put Pakistan and India on the same side against extremism. We have de-hyphenated our relationship with Pakistan and with India, building strong independent ties with each," she said on Thursday. During her March trip to the sub-continent she congratulated both India and Pakistan on having taken steps toward "warmer relations" with each other.

"With India, the world's largest democracy, we are cooperating on a global strategy for peace, and on defence, energy and growth. A few weeks ago India's Foreign Minister met with President Bush and they discussed ways we might accelerate our cooperation still further and we look forward to a July visit by Prime Minister [Manmohan] Singh," Dr. Rice said.
