Brian Davis in lead

MERIDEN (ENGLAND): England's Brian Davis shot a 1-under 71 on Friday for a one-stroke lead after the second round of the British Masters.

Coping even better with the wind at Forest of Arden, Thomas Bjorn shot 68 to share second place with Soren Hansen and David Howell.

Hansen had a 71 while Howell, one of the first-round pacesetters, had a par 72. Last week's Italian Open winner Steve Webster and Michael Campbell were on 1 under, the only other players to still be under par at the end of the second round. More than 30 players had rounds of 80 or worse, with the cut set to be the highest on the European Tour so far this year. Back from the U.S. Tour where he had two top-10 finishes and two more in the top 20, Davis started his round at the 10th and birdied the 11th and 12th.

But he missed a short par putt on the 16th. At the 17th, he took a triple-bogey eight, hitting two shots from the fairway rough into the water. He recovered with four birdies and just one bogey on his second nine to finish at 4-under 140 overall. — AP
