Computerised Police Helpline from May 18

Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD: The Director-General of Police (DGP), Raman Srivastava, has said that the publishing of the mobile phone numbers of Deputy Inspector-Generals of Police (DIGs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) will go a long way in making the police more public-friendly.

He was talking to mediapersons at the district police office here on Saturday. The DGP was here to attend a police adalat.

The DGP said he got 50 to 60 calls a day on his mobile phone. He said he could sort out many complaints and take action against officers who failed to discharge their duty. About 80 per cent of the calls he gets on the mobile phone are from women. The mobile connectivity has increased the accountability of the police force.

The DGP said the opening of a computerised Police Helpline on May 18 and the ambitious multi-crore-modernisation programme would revamp the force in the State.

Mr. Srivastava said he would take some time to study the strong and weak points of the force. ``But I am committed to modernising the police force. My dream is a public-friendly, transparent, accessible and accountable police force," Mr. Srivastava said.

"A visit to all districts once in three months and regular public adalats are among the new programmes I have chalked out. Disposal of recent cases and long-pending cases in a time-bound manner is another area I wish to focus on," he said.
