BJP denies ties with Congress

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The BJP State president, P.S. Sridharan Pillai, has refuted the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan's allegation that there is an understanding between the BJP and the Congress. Mr. Vijayan's comment reflects the apprehension in the CPI(M) over the prospects of its candidates in the forthcoming byelections, Mr. Pillai said at a press conference here on Saturday.

The BJP had its own reasons for not putting up candidates at Koothuparamba and Azhikode. The party had not put up a candidate in Koothuparamba during the last Assembly elections while its candidate in Azhikode got about 3,000 votes. Mr. Pillai wondered whether the absence of CPI(M) candidates in most of the constituencies facing byelections in the country would mean its secret deals with some other political parties.

The LDF leadership should disclose why it had not taken any action on an intelligence report of 1997-98, as disclosed by a senior IPS officer in her deposition before the Marad Judicial Commission, indicating that the NDF had links with the ISI. It is significant that the LDF was in power in a panchayat in Malappuram district with the NDF support during the period. The UDF Government too seems to have ignored the episode, giving rise to several doubts, he said.

Answering a question, Mr. Pillai said the unity of Nair-Ezhava communities is good as they were at the receiving end on several counts. To another question, he said the BJP was opposing the Smart City project as it lacked transparency. He denied reports that the party had any serious organisational problems.
