BELLARY: The Bellary branch of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) will start functioning from its own building at Nallacheruvu area at a cost of Rs. 33 lakhs from Sunday. The building, which has come up in a 100 ft x 110 ft area, has a well-equipped operation theatre and 100 beds. The building has been constructed with donations from philanthropists. M. Diwakar Babu, as the then Minister of State for Cooperation, had got Rs. 2 lakhs released out of the Hyderabad-Karnatak Area Development Fund which was utilised for the compound wall, and Rs. 3.70 lakhs from Abhiraj Baldota of the Baldota Foundation Trust, Hospet, which was utilised for the construction of the women's ward. S.K. Modi of the Vibhuti Gudda Mines donated Rs. 2.30 lakhs, which was used for constructing the operation theatre, and Sudha Murthy of the Infosys Foundation Trust donated Rs. 1 lakh for the construction of men's ward. In addition, a sum of Rs. 24 lakhs was collected in the form of donation from beneficiaries and also the members and staff. Since being established in 1973, the branch had been functioning in a rented building. The FPAI branch, apart from conducting nearly 100 family planning operations every month, has been involved in health and family planning activities, Stree Shakti programme, birth-based approach, safe abortions, sex education for teenagers and is running a counselling centre to educate people about HIV/AIDS. B.K. Srinivasmurthy, a leading physician and member of the branch, will inaugurate the building. Sharada Malebennur, president of the branch, will preside over the inaugural function. M.C. Watsa, President of FPAI, Mumbai, M.N. Tavergeri, treasurer of FPAI, Mumbai, Karunakar Reddy, MP, Sriramulu, K.C. Kondaiah, both legislators, G. Somashekar Reddy, Mayor of Bellary, are among the chief guests.
