CHITRADURGA: The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, has said that the Vani Vilas Sugar Factory at Hiriyur, which was closed down owing to financial problems, will start functioning soon. Inaugurating "Sujala," a public awareness convention, at Imangala village of Hiriyur taluk on Friday evening, he said that a decision has been taken to hand over the factory to the private sector on contract. It is expected that the factory will resume crushing sugarcane from the next season. An agreement will be signed by May end to revive the factory, he added.
Arrears
Farmers who supplied sugarcane to the factory were facing a lot of problems because they have not been paid. Mr. Manjunath also wanted watershed development works to be taken up in the district. He stressed the need to provide a market for the products of rural women's and self-help groups. He urged the members of such groups to make use of the revolving fund provided by the Government for income-generation activities. Presiding over the programme, G.H. Thippa Reddy, Chitradurga MLA, said that though the benefits of the Sujala schemes may not be immediately evident but it will be helpful in the long term.
Check dams
He said that a Rs. 6.7-crore watershed development programme near M.D. Kote will benefit farmers in that area. He wanted at least one check dam to be constructed at every village to ensure the improvement of water resources. He also said that rules must be relaxed while implementing schemes to help all sections of society. N.Y Hanumanthappa, MP, said that repairs of breached tanks taken up at the cost of Rs. 75 lakhs under the MP's Local Area Development Scheme will be completed shortly. He also urged the contractors to ensure good quality work. He regretted the failure of banks to finance project proposals for the poor, daily-wage earners and marginal farmers for want of security. He offered to stand surety for the poor who are in need of bank loans by providing funds from the MP's Local Area Development Scheme as security. Girija Pujari Ningappa, president of the zilla panchayat, spoke.
