KOZHIKODE: Careless drilling of road to lay cable for the BSNL has led to a prolonged disruption of water supply to hundreds of households in the centre of the city. For nearly five days in a row, there has not been supply of water in these places. Almost all houses in this region depend on KWA for drinking water. Hundreds of residents in two major housing colonies and a number of families near the Arayidathupalam by-pass road have been affected. The assistant engineer, Kerala Water Authority (KWA) who is supervising the repair of leaking water-pipeline, blamed the workers employed by a contractor to lay BSNL cable for the damage. The prolonged breakdown of water supply has also triggered off loud protests. K. P. Baby, president, Jawaharnagar Residents Association, and the association-secretary, A. Ramachandran, on Saturday, in a memorandum, appealed to the District Collector to take strong action against BSNL officials concerned as well as the contractor. The association spokesmen said they should be held responsible and punished for putting public to hardship. Even though initially KWA authorities suspected only a small rupture in the pipeline, a closer examination revealed that it was a major one that needed a long time to repair. The pipeline was later found to have been ripped apart by the drilling machine that was used by the contractor to lay the pipeline that was passing by the side of the road. The KWA assistant engineer said the damage was so severe that some portion of the pipeline had to be relaid.
