Taiwan parties share honours in poll

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Neither the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) nor the main Opposition Kuomintang (KMT) won a decisive majority in the latest National Assembly election in the non-sovereign territory of Taiwan on Saturday. The voter turnout was of the order of only 25 per cent of the total electorate of 16.75 million, and reports from Taipei indicated an official final tally of 127 seats for the DPP and 117 seats for the KMT in the 300-strong National Assembly. However, the expectation in the governing circles in Taipei was that the KMT would support the DPP in pushing for some of the proposed amendments to the territory's `Constitution'. The results of the poll attracted international attention, though, for the reason that the KMT Chairman, Lien Chan, had only very recently held "historic" talks with Chinese President and General Secretary of Communist Party of China, Hu Jintao, in Beijing. During that meeting, Mr. Lien made it abundantly clear that his party was opposed to any political or other moves that might explicitly or even implicitly lead to "independence" for the non-sovereign territory of Taiwan. Mr. Hu, who later received another Taiwanese leader, James Soong of the People First Party, said China would be willing to talk to any political leader or party from that territory, regardless of their past record, if they accepted the one-China principle and opposed any notion of independence for Taiwan. It now remains to be seen, in this context, how the DPP leader and Taiwan's `pro-independence' President, Chen Shui-bian, would push for constitutional reforms.
