3 held for temple theft

ERODE : The Uthukuli police arrested three persons in connection with the theft at Kaithamalai Murugan temple. It is stated that on January 26, 2004 midnight, five persons entered the temple located near Uthukuli and after murdering the watchman Murugasamy, took away silver ornaments weighing about two kg.

Those arrested are Raja (19), Shankar (24) of Uthangarai and Ramesh (27) of Krishnagiri. Similarly, the Erode Town Crime Police on Saturday arrested four youths- Ravi, Vijayakumar, Babu and Hariprasad of Erode and recovered from them gold jewels weighing 14 sovereigns. All the four were remanded to custody for 15 days. - Staff Reporter

Woman drowned

ERODE : A woman accidentally fell into an open well and drowned on Friday night. According to police, Rajathy (35), wife of Duraian of Kongarpalayam within Chitode police limits, was employed in a private textile calendaring mill.

She had gone to the garden to attend to the nature's call, when she accidentally fell into an open well in the area and got drowned. - Staff Reporter

Pulse polio second phase today

CHENNAI: The second round of the pulse polio campaign, to provide free oral polio vaccine to children up to five years of age, will be held on Sunday.

The Public Health department has made arrangements in coordination with other departments, Rotary Clubs and private hospitals to administer the oral vaccine to all children who have received the first dose, those who missed it and the newborns. Around 73 lakh children are expected to benefit from the second round.

The State will set up 40,000 booths in Government hospitals, primary health centres, health sub-centres, noon-meal centres, schools, bus stands, tourist spots and railway stations. Over two lakh personnel will be involved, in addition to private clinics and hospitals, according to a release.

Gentian violet solution will be applied to the left little finger of each child after vaccination as identification.

A house-to-house verification drive will be conducted on the second and third days and houses will be marked with `p' to ensure that all children in that area have been immunised. — Special Correspondent

Training for tsunami volunteers

CHENNAI: The Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC) will conduct a training programme on psychological counselling for volunteers, who will then work with the tsunami-affected children.

Volunteers will be given a short training in emotional and psychological healing through story telling, drama, music, songs, puppet-making and library activities, according to Vijayalakshmi Nagaraj and Surekha Panandikar, AWIC executive members.

They will also work towards setting up a children's library in Nagapattinam. — Special Correspondent

Plea to put off training for teachers

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Post-Graduate Teachers Association has urged the Government to postpone the in-service training for teachers handling Plus-Two classes.

The training is to start on May 16.

S. Murthy, president, said in a release the training programme could be conducted after the summer vacation.

Pointing out that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had stayed the conduct of such training during summer holidays, he said even last year teachers were deprived of the vacation due to general elections.

The number of working days too has been increased to 240 from 200 days.

Mr. Murthy said the entire teacher community was looking forward to the summer holidays. — Staff Reporter

`Do away with entrance exam'

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder leader, S. Ramadoss, has urged the State Government to do away with the entrance examination for admission to professional colleges, as it is not providing level-playing ground for rural students.

In a statement on Saturday, Dr. Ramadoss said the examination was a stumbling block to the rural students who wanted to pursue professional courses.

Tamil medium students, belonging to rural areas were at a disadvantage compared to English medium students in urban areas in getting admission in good professional colleges in the State.

To provide equal opportunities to all, he wanted the Government to select students on the basis of their performance in the Plus-Two examinations only. — Special Correspondent

Two killed as van rams lorry

Thanjavur : Two persons were killed and 19 others injured when a tourist van in which they were travelling rammed a parked lorry near Sengipatti 20 km from here this morning.

The deceased were Nagaraj (30) and Ponnuswamy (44). The injured persons were admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. The van was coming from Coimbatore to Kumbakonam. Sengipatti police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter.

Economic census

PUDUKOTTAI : The fifth economic census will begin in Pudukottai district from May 15 and end on June 16.

An official release issued here on Friday said the census was being conducted to ascertain the development of the district.

All houses in villages and towns, small, medium and big business establishments, pavement and platform vendors and industrial institutions would be covered.

However, agro-based industries would not be covered. The Collector, R. Thiagarajan, called upon the public to cooperate with the census personnel. — Staff Reporter.

Warning against pasting posters

Thanjavur : The Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, warned that stern action would be taken against those who put up posters on the name boards on highway roads. Presiding over a road safety review meeting at the Collectorate recently, he said pasting posters on the highway road signboards should be stopped. — Staff Reporter.

Mettur level

Tiruchi : The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 52.66 feet today. The inflow was 613 cusecs and the discharge 890 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Career guidance programme today

TIRUNELVELI: In a bid to guide the SSLC, Plus-One and Plus-Two students in the district and commemorate the birth centenary of the former Speaker, Si. Pa. Aditanar, the `Daily Thanthi' and Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar Engineering College, Tiruchendur, will jointly organise a one-day career guidance programme at the Sarah Tucker Girls' Higher Secondary School at Palayamkottai on May 15.

Experts from various fields such as engineering, medicine, law, civil services, defence forces, agriculture, sports, economics and commerce will address the students. The Collector, Atul Anand, will inaugurate it.

Man arrested, stolen wires recovered

Tuticorin: The Murapanad police on Friday arrested Abdul Khadir (32) for stealing electric wires of the Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board.

According to the police, the accused took away 2,135 metres of wires kept at Vallanad. The wires were also recovered. He was remanded in custody.

Three arrested for gambling

Tuticorin: The police on Friday arrested three persons who were gambling at a public place on Friday evening.

The police said Sudalaimani (48), Subramanian ( 51) and E Muthu (55) were arrested from Tiruchendur area. They were remanded in custody.

BJP cadres observe fast

Tuticorin: Bharatiya Janata Party cadres observed a fast in front of the Kovilpatti RDO's Office, demanding the removal of a church situated near the Kasi Vishwanathar Temple at Manthithopu.

The police said 48 party men took part in the agitation. — Staff Reporter
