PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Government expects approval from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start a Government medical college here this academic year or next, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said. Inaugurating a one-day camp on `educational awareness and counselling' for students of fishermen families in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions (organised by Fishermen Multipurpose Social Service Centre) here on Saturday the Chief Minister said the Fisheries department would start soon a training institute on different aspects of fisheries and fishing activities here. The Government aimed at achieving cent percent literacy in Pondicherry, which now had a record of 83 per cent rate of literacy. There was no justification for any parent to keep their children off schools as the Education department provided uniform, breakfast, noon-meal, schoolbooks and scholarship to students, he said. Mr.Rangasamy said that the Government ran a coaching centre to prepare candidates appearing for the civil service examinations of Union Public Service Commission. Referring to the welfare measures taken for fishermen in the Union Territory he said that as soon as tsunami struck the Union Territory in December last year his government initiated immediate measures even as the Central funds were awaited.
