PONDICHERRY: The territorial administration's plan to operate flights from the Pondicherry airport has run into rough weather. Three aircraft operators had showed interest in the project but backed out later. Jagson, a North Indian-based commercial flight operator, was keen to operate flights. But his demand for compensation if they could not operate its small aircraft in full capacity has put the government in a tight spot. "The proposal was not agreeable to the administration and we have asked them to submit a fresh proposal," Lt Governor M.M. Lakhera told the Hindu. A senior official, who deals with the issue, said the Government communicated to the operator that it could consider his demand if he gave unattended seats at a concessional rate. It was yet to receive a reply. The operator is facing a shortage of pilots. "Three of its aircraft, operating in the North, have been grounded and they are trying to get pilots from Nepal," the official said. When contacted over the phone J.P. Gupta, Chairman of Jagson Private Limited, said "we are keen on operating flights from Pondicherry. But at this stage we cannot give a commitment when the operations would start".
Airport project
The Government has been making efforts to construct an airport at Karaikal. The Government plans to have a small airport with a 2,000-metre runway and a terminal in the first phase at a cost of Rs 20 crores. The process for acquiring 350 acres of temple land at Karaikal is on.
