BANGALORE: Are you interested in finding out the locations of more than 20,000 species of plants in the Western Ghats or mapping out areas of specific plant varieties? Or maybe you are interested in accessing records of bio-resources in the area? Well, this information is now only a click away. The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) launched here on Friday the country's first Eco-informatics Centre. The information is available on the Geographic Information System enabled website, www.ecoinfoindia.org. The centre is an umbrella organisation that collates and makes available to the public scientific knowledge on the eco-resources available of the country. "A feature of the centre is that information critical to success in conservation and management of the diminishing biological resources is easily available to the public," K.S. Bawa of ATREE said. It signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Chemical Laboratories, Pune, to build institutional collaboration and share data. The Eco-informatics Centre has been working with the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Bangalore to build up the database. For the past five years, the UAS, with funding from the Department of Biotechnology, has been collecting data on plants, cash crops and parasites. They are planning to put up the work on the public domain through the Internet, K.N. Ganeshaiah, UAS professor said. Inaugurating the centre, M.Y.S. Prasad, Director of the Master Control Facility in Hassan, said the Indian Space Research Organisation will help organisations to conserve the environment.
