`Only 40 unauthorised occupants evicted from wakf property'

Staff Reporter

Monthly rent of Rs. 6 lakhs from Windsor Manor Sheraton and Towers

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Wakf Board has taken action only against 10 per cent of unauthorised occupants of wakf properties. The rent recovered from the occupants has not been to the expected level, said Syed Zameer Pasha, Director of Agricultural Marketing, who is holding additional charge as Administrator of the board.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of the board employees on Saturday, Mr. Pasha told The Hindu that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the board has initiated action against 40 unauthorised occupants. "Action is yet to be taken against many such occupants," he said.

On the Windsor Manor Sheraton and Towers issue, Mr. Pasha said the board, since January, has been receiving a monthly rent of Rs. 6 lakhs from the hotel administration, pending the hotel's appeal to the Karnataka High Court against the eviction order issued by the board.

Earlier, wakf officers and inspectors from all over the State held discussions on the difficulties they face in protecting wakf properties.

Mubeen Ahmed Baig, secretary of Wakf Board employees' association, said there is work pressure because of staff shortage. Updating records of wakf properties has slowed down. "The revenue and municipal records of many wakf properties have not been updated. Many properties, including a cemetery in Shanti Nagar in Bangalore, do not have `khata.' If no attention is given to updating the records, it will be difficult for us to protect wakf properties," he said.

S.K. Hussaini, Wakf Officer from Raichur district, said the services of persons employed on contract have not been regularised although they have served for long on low wages. Regularising their services will help both the board and the workers on contract, he added.

He said there is a delay in reimbursing the medical bills of employees. Many employees have not got promotions in years.

Assurance

In reply, Mr. Pasha said he has asked a private institute to study the functioning of the board and its employees. "It will make a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) analysis, and make recommendations for making the board a professional unit."

He asked the employees to prepare a list of lands owned by the Wakf Board and maintain proper accounts. He promised to issue directions to the CEO to clear medical reimbursement and promotions for employees.
