Congress, Janata Dal (S) try to remove the impression that they are at loggerheads on key issues

  • Projects being implemented with Deve Gowda's guidance: Dharam Singh
  • Dharam Singh has done his job: Deve Gowda
  • It was not a show of JD(S) strength: Javare Gowda

HASSAN: The function organised by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to lay the foundation stone for a Rs. 70-crore milk powder plant at Shettihalli in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district on Friday provided a platform for Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) leaders to give the impression that all is well with the coalition.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Janata Dal (Secular) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, praised each other in the presence of the Union Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dharam Singh said there are no differences between the coalition partners, and the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) are working for the "integrated development'' of the State. The Government is adhering to the common minimum programme, and the coalition experiment has been successful in the State, he added. Despite "minor" differences, the Government has been able to implement pro-people programmes under the guidance of Mr. Deve Gowda, Mr. Dharam Singh said. He described the "pro-people" budget as the highlight of the coalition rule.

In his short address, Mr. Deve Gowda commended the efforts of Mr. Dharam Singh in running the coalition. "Although it is difficult to run a coalition government, Mr. Singh has accomplished the job because of his patience cultivated over the years,'' he said.

However, he appealed to Mr. Singh to tell his Ministers to seek more projects from the Union Government.

    Support for JD(S)

At the programme, which was said to have been attended by more than 80,000 members of milk unions in Hassan, the support enjoyed by the Janata Dal (S) in the district was evident.

The Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, countered reports of that he had "personal differences" with B. Shivaram, Minister for Information, by honouring him. Mr. Revanna had been accused of having failed to honour his colleague at the function organised to lay the foundation stone for the Dyapalapura model village.

    `No mobilisation'

The Janata Dal (S) dismissed a comment from leaders of the Opposition parties in the district that the programme was its show of strength. The party leader and former MP, H.K. Javare Gowda, said members of milk unions in the district came on their own to attend the function.
