Nature orientation

MYSORE: A 10-day nature orientation camp will be held for children between 10 and 18 years at Kokkrebellur from May 18 to 28.

Organised by Mysore Amateur Naturalists (MAN), the camp is designed to impart skills and knowledge about natural history, photography, writing and speaking. Participants will be exposed to bird-watching, trekking, plant identification, insect watch, attending birds in the pen and reptile identification. Sculpture camp

MYSORE: A bronze sculpture camp will be held from May 15 to 26 at Ramsons Kala Pratishtana. The Minister of State for Labour, Tanvir Sait, will inaugurate the camp. D. Ram Singh, chairman of Ramsons Pratishtana, will be the chief guest. The camp is being held in association with the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy, Bangalore, to keep alive the art of making traditional bronze sculpture. Sixteen youths from across the State will participate in the camp. — Staff Correspondent

Revanna lays foundation stones

HASSAN: The Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, laid foundations stones for five 66/11 kV transmission stations in Mosale Hosahalli, Kandli, and Gorur in Hassan taluk; Hagare in Belur taluk; and Satenahalli in Channarayaptna taluk recently. He said the Government has sanctioned Rs. 13.45 crores for the completion of the five transmission stations. All five stations will start functioning within the next year, he added. The Government has approved the commissioning of 22 transmission stations of 66/11 kV in the last 10 months for improving power supply to Hassan city, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Farmhouse robbed

HASSAN: A gang robbed a farmhouse near Manchenahalli gate on Channarayapatna-Nuggehalli Road of Channarayapatna taluk on Friday night. They injured the owner of the house, Range Gowda (50), before decamping with jewellery. According to a complaint filed with the Nuggehalli police, the gang members entered the house through the open door and attacked Range Gowda with a stone. They opened a trunk and a cupboard and robbed the contents. Range Gowda has been admitted to the hospital, the police said. — Staff Correspondent

Illicit liquor seized

Bidar: Excise officials seized 110 litres of illicit liquor and arrested three persons in raids in Markunda in Bidar taluk.

The accused Ramulu Kadapape, Raghu Ainapure and Bhuvan Singh have been remanded in judicial custody. A case has been registered at the Bidar rural police station. — Staff Correspondent

Pulse Polio drive today

Belgaum: The district administration has set a target of immunising 5.77 lakh children with Pulse Polio drops under the second phase of the immunisation programme commencing from Sunday.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, Maheshwar Rao, a large number of personnel of the health department, social activists and members of NGOs have been involved in the programme. Polio drops would be administered at 1,811 centres in rural areas and 409 centres in the urban centres of the district. In all, 8,880 personnel have been deployed and 444 officials will supervise the programme. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The Government Tool Room & Training Centre at Udyambagh here has invited applications from interested candidates for four-year (3+1) diploma course in tool and dye making.

Students with SSLC pass (with at least 40 perm cent aggregate) are eligible for admission, which is based on a qualifying examination

Basavaraj Bommai to head JD(U) panel

New Delhi: The Janata Dal (United) President, George Fernandes, has appointed Basavaraj Bommai, MLC, as Chairman of the 14-member Parliamentary Board of Karnataka ahead of panchayat elections in the State. The Janata Dal (U) State unit President, B. Somashekhar, and party legislators J.C. Madhuswamy, Bhimappa Sarikar, M.S. Akki, H. Anjaneya, Nagamani Nagegowda and Channabasappa are among the 14 members. M.P. Nadagouda, Secretary General of the State unit, is the Secretary of the Parliamentary Board which selects party nominees for elections. — UNI

Jeep hits tree near

Ron; one killed

Hubli: One person was killed and five were injured when the jeep in which they were travelling hit a tree near Ron town on Saturday. The police said the driver of the jeep, in which the District Information Officer and presspersons were travelling to the venue of a function in Gadag district, lost control over the vehicle. The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital at Ron, the police added. — UNI

`Naxals influencing weavers' children'

Bangalore: The Chairman of the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, L.R. Ananth, has alleged that naxalites are attempting to involve in their activities the children of weavers in distress. He said that though the Government has taken steps to provide yarn to handloom and powerloom weavers, nine lakh weavers are not receiving regular supplies. They are in distress, and naxalites are trying to take advantage of the situation and involve their children in their activities, he said. He appealed to weavers not to be influenced by naxalites. — Special Correspondent

Dharna by bank deposit collectors

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Pradesh Bank Deposit Collectors' Federation will hold a daylong dharna in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on M.G. Road here on Monday to protest the "failure" of the Indian Banks' Association to solve their problems. Addressing presspersons on Saturday, Sridhar Murthy, general secretary of the federation, said the banks' association has failed to address problems of bank deposit collectors, who, he said, were responsible for popularising the banking system. Deposit collectors, who have been recognised as bank employees, are being paid wages fixed in 1980, he added. — Staff Reporter

Jan Shatabdi augmented

HUBLI: The South Western Railway will augment the Bangalore-Hubli-Bangalore Jan Shatabdi with two second-class chair cars and one air-conditioned coach from Sunday to clear the summer rush. Four pairs of trains will stop for one minute at Nagalavi station on the Hubli-Londa section of the Hubli Division for the convenience of people attending the Maheboob Subhani from May 19 to 24. A press note says Train nos. 1017/1018 Bangalore-Dadar- Bangalore Chalukya Express; 1047/1048 Hubli-Miraj-Hubli Express; 7415/7416 Hyderabad-Tirupati-Kolhapur-Tirupati-Hyderabad Haripriya Express; and 7309/7310 Yeshwantpur-Vasco-Yeshwantpur Biweekly Express will stop at the station. — Special Correspondent

South Western Railway wins shield

HUBLI: The South Western Railway (SWR) has been awarded the "Commercial and traffic transportation shield" for 2004-05 from the Ministry of Railways. Trilok Nath Perty, General Manager, South Western Railway, and Suresh Joseph, Chief Commercial Manager, received the shield from Lalu Prasad, Minister for Railways, at a programme held in Kolkata recently. This is the second consecutive year the SWR has been awarded the shield, Mr. Perty said in a release. — Staff Correspondent
