NELLORE: Well-known ophthalmologist and Director, Bollineni Eye Hospital and Research Centre (BEHRC), Nellore, N. Sai Murali, has said that with the country having 3-crore cataract patients, it is high time to create awareness among people with regard to eye diseases. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said India apart from being the second populous country in the world had to fight against blindness for which the National Blindness Control Programme had been launched. Dr. Sai Murali pointed out that with the latest technology it took just 10 minutes to conduct a cataract operation. However, people generally ignored symptoms and most of the patients with cataract belonged to the 60 plus age group. He suggested that people should go in for yearly eye check-up. He informed that in a number of instances complaints of eye disorders among school going children were not taken seriously and by the time parents brought them for a check up, the disorder turned serious. Dr. Sai Murali cautioned diabetics to be careful about eye diseases.
Insurance package
He called for some kind of an insurance package, which would go a long way in taking care of the cost factor with regard to getting eye ailments treated.
