CUDDAPAH: Twenty-seven houses of potters were destroyed in a fire in Kallur village in Proddatur mandal on Saturday afternoon, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 4.56 lakhs. Sparks emanating due to friction of overhead electric wires fell on one of the houses and the fire soon spread due to burning neem tree leaves, according to Proddatur MRO, S. Khader Basha. Twenty-six houses were fully burnt and one partially damaged, he said. Five tolas of gold, Rs. 20,000 cash, 16 bags of paddy and 20 quintals of cotton were reduced to ashes in the house of a potter, Nandaiah. Three fire tenders from Proddatur, Jammalamadugu and Mydukur rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze according to the Fire Officer, Vijaya Kumar.
Cash distributed
The MRO disbursed cash of Rs. 1,500 for families whose houses were fully damaged and Rs. 750 given for a partly damaged house, besides 20 kg of rice. Nandyala Konda Reddy, son of Proddatur MLA, N. Varadarajulu Reddy, donated Rs. 10,000 for purchasing clothes and the sarpanch, Nagendra Reddy, arranged food for the victims.
Goats perish
Four goats perished and 10 paddy bags were reduced to ashes when the thatched house of Sivaiah was gutted in Sominenigadda Dalitawada in Tsundupalle mandal due to a reported short circuit on Saturday.
