Staff Reporter
WATER WOES: Heavy rush near water tankers is a common sight in Kurnool district. The prevailing heat wave has made things worse.
KURNOOL: Kurnool district has been reeling under a severe heat wave during the last few days. Day temperature, which was recorded at 38.3 degree centigrade on May 9, soared to 42.5 deg. C. Scores of people were admitted to hospitals with sunstroke. Two days ago, four people suffered sunstroke at Burandoddi near here. The temperatures recorded in the last few days were: May 9 (38.3), May 10 (41.6), May 11 (41.9), May 12 (42.8), May 13 (42.5) and May 14 (42.5). Serious water problem arose for cattle across the district while the authorities concentrated on supply to human habitations. Families in rural areas have been finding it difficult to provide water for cattle this season.
Rain of no help
However, the recent rain helped bring in some flows to the tanks and ponds. However, the showers did not help much to bring down the temperature. Villages on the banks of Tungabhadra, which never experienced water shortage, were struggling to cope up with the problem in the last few years. The riverbed went dry during summer in the last two years. The Rural Water Supply Department identified 49 villages as critical from the point of water availability. However, they said transport was not required to supply water as local arrangement were made by digging borewells or hiring the private borewells.
