Manjusha sets lone meet record

Jency finishes second ahead of Tissy Peter

KOCHI: C.A. Manjusha (Pathanamthitta) accounted for the lone new meet record that was established on the opening day of the 42nd State senior athletic meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru international stadium here on Saturday.

The 20-year-old made up for the string of disappointing results that the day witnessed as she collared the 10km walk gold with a time of 55:01.40, a good 12 seconds better than the previous record of 55:13.00 set by Asha Sebastian in 1996.

A second-year B.A. student in Economics at the Assumption College, Changanassery, Manjusha was pushed into putting her best foot forward by Jency Joy (Thrissur), before the former ascertained her supremacy. Jency who came in second was timed at 56:08.10 ahead of Tissy Peter (Kottayam).

Sadly, most of the other events that were gone through on the day failed to enthuse the crowd as the participants, hardly into competitive training, disappointed. But all the same, it was a profitable outing for host Ernakulam in the men's section and Pathanamthitta in the women's division.

In the men's section, Ernakulam finished the day with a haul of four gold, one silver and four bronzes to top the field with 59 points. The results (all finals): Men: 100m: 1. K.K. Biju (Ekm), 2.
