Chandy lays stress on role of Church in social awareness

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said that the Church is very much a part of society and that it has a major role in making the masses aware of the rights and wrongs in the larger interest of society.

Mr. Chandy was inaugurating a public meeting organised to felicitate the newly consecrated bishop of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church, Abraham Mar Paulos, at the SC Seminary Hills in Thiruvalla on Saturday.

Mr. Chandy said the Church had the role of a corrective force to play by laying stress on the overall welfare of society.

The Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Philipose Mar Chrysostom, presided over the meeting.

The Suffragan Metropolitans of the church, Joseph Mar Irenaeus and Zacharias Mar Theophilus, Joseph Mar Barnabas, Geevarghese Mar Athanasius, Geevarghese Mar Themothios, Augen Mar Dionusius, Joseph Mar Coorilos, Thomas Mar Themothios, and Yuyakim Mar Coorilos, the Vicar General, D. Philip, the church secretary, Fr. Cherian Thomas, P.J. Kurien, MP, the MLAs Raju Abraham, Malethu Saraladevi and Elizabeth Mammen Mathai, the clergy trustee, M.P. Yohannan, and the former Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University Cyriac Thomas also addressed the meeting.
