KOLLAM: Although the Crime Branch probe into the April 6 custodial death at Kollam East police station is yet to be wound up, the Government is planning a departmental inquiry into the case. This will be in addition to the Sub-Judicial Magistrate probe inquiry into the case. Sources said that the arrests in connection with the case would come only after the announcement of the departmental inquiry. A 36-year-old man, Rajendran, taken into custody by Kollam East Police had died in custody the same day. The autopsy report shows that he died owing to serious internal injuries inflicted by brutal assaults. The reason for the Government planning a parallel departmental probe when the Crime Branch investigation is yet to be completed has become a topic of debate in police circles. Sources said that a polarised view in the Police Department over Crime Branch investigations had compelled the Government to think along these lines. The Crime Branch DIG, B. Sandhya, who heads the investigation, has gone on a week's leave from Monday. On the arrests in connection with the case, the investigating personnel said they were only a side-issue. Since the probe centres on only two constables attached to Kollam East Police station, the Kerala Police Association is poised to take up the issue of rendering them legal aid.
