Consecration of new bishop held

PATHANAMTHITTA: The consecration of K. U. Abraham Ramban as Dr Abraham Mar Paulos Episcopa of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar was held at the SC Seminary Hills in Thiruvalla with religious fervour today.

The Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Philipose Mar Chrysostom, was the chief celebrant of the consecration service.

The Metropolitan and other bishops were led to the specially prepared Madbaha at the SCS Hills from the nearby St Thomas Mar Thoma Church at 7 a.m.

Joseph Mar Irenaeus Saffragan Metropolitan led the Holy Communion as part of the consecration ceremony and it was concluded by the new bishop, later.

In his concluding message, Mar Chrysostom said that a Bishop is the sign and symbol of unity of the Church.

``May God bless the new bishop with the grace, mercy, power and vision of God to participate obediently in the reconciling, redemptive and consummating ministry of God in Jesus Christ,'' the Metropolitan added as his concluding words.

Bishops, Geevarghese Mar Athanaseus, Geevarghese Mar Themotheos, Augen Mar Divannaseus, Joseph Mar Barnabas, Thomas Mar Themotheos, Yuyakim Mar Koorilos, the CSI Bishops, Sam Mathew, Michel John, Thomas Samuel and George Issac, the Bishop of the Thozhiyoor Church, Joseph Mar Coorilos, the Mar Thoma Church secretary, Cherian Thomas and the Vicar-General, D. Philip, also addressed the consecration ceremony.

The consecration service came to a close with the new bishop, accompanied by the Metropolitan and other bishops, returned to the St Thomas Mar Thoma Church in a procession around 11.30 a.m.

The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, inaugurated the public meeting held at the SCS Hills later.
