GUNTUR: There was an exchange of fire between the special party police and the Maoists at Adigoppula of Durgi mandal in the early hours of Saturday. The police party was searching for those involved in the attack on the Durgi police station with a rocket launcher on Tuesday night. The police came under fire from the Maoists at around 5 a.m., which they returned. There were no casualties on either side in the exchange that lasted half an hour. Police sources said no major leader of the Maoist party was present in the village, but a majority of those who participated in the attack on the police station were from the surrounding villages. The Guntur police picked up 30 persons, including an important Maoist leader, Srinivas, for interrogation from Adigoppula and outskirts. This evoked a strong reaction from women of the village who went to Macherla to register their protest with their MLA, Pinneli Lakshma Reddy. The police, however, denied that they had arrested or picked up anyone from the village. When contacted, the Superintendent of Police, Jitender, said those responsible for the Durgi incident would be brought to book very soon in a lawful manner. Meanwhile, the police suspect that an autorickshaw driver, Talladugu Koteswara Rao, was done to death by naxalites at Papaipalem in Bellamkonda mandal on Friday night.
