Thrust areas will be water resources, waste management, traffic decongestion, heritage conservation, development of international airport and tourism promotion
JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, on Saturday announced setting up of a Jaipur Agenda Action Group - headed by her - for review and monitoring of special projects being formulated for development of Jaipur as a modern city. The projects, with the emphasis on citizens-Government interface, will be devised to meet the needs of the Pink City by 2010. Addressing a Press conference at the end of a three-day "future search workshop" here, Ms. Raje said the projects would ensure people's partnership in the development of the Capital city with 12 thrust areas identified by the stake-holders. The Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industry has agreed to provide space in its building for housing the action group's office. Ms. Raje said a "Sahbhaagita" (participation) cell would also be established shortly to promote the partnership of various sections of society in the development process, so as to carry out time-bound implementation of the projects before 2010. Besides, 12 civic wards have been identified in the city for intensive action in various sectors. The multiple stake-holder groups which participated in the workshop were from the civil society, including eminent citizens and non-Government orgnisations, trade and business sectors, civic services agencies, tourism and hotel industry and heritage conservation. Elected representatives, including the Members of Parliament and Assembly, the Jaipur Mayor, and several Ministers also attended the event. Ms. Raje said the thrust areas listed during the workshop were mainly water resources, solid waste management, traffic decongestion, heritage conservation, development of international airport, night bazaars and craft communities, urban laws, strengthening of satellite hospitals, habitat improvement, promotion of tourism and the city decongestion. "In all these programmes, the Government is going to function only as a facilitators. The ideas for development will come from the citizens at large," said Ms. Raje. She said the initiative being taken up in Jaipur as a pilot project "on non-political lines" could be extended to other divisional headquarters in the State on its successful completion. The Asian Centre for Organisation, Research and Development was the principal participant in the workshop, while 12 groups comprising nine members each made presentations on various aspects of development.
