Mar Baselius new Major Archbishop

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The head of the Syro-Malankara Church, Cyril Mar Baselius, was installed as its first Major Archbishop-Catholicos in front of a large gathering of the faithful and dignitaries at a solemn function on Saturday.

The prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches, Ignace Cardinal Mousa Daoud, led the installation ceremony at St. Mary's cathedral in Pattom around 8 a.m. The installation began with Pedro Lopez Quintana, representative of the Pope, reading out the papal bull (appointment letter) in Latin.

Following this, the prefect sought the consent of Mar Baselius for the installation. He was later seated on a throne and lifted up three times by the chancellors from various dioceses to mark the installation.

Each time the throne was lifted, a priest specially designated by the prefect chanted `Oxios,' a Syriac word meaning `he is eligible.' The word was repeated by the gathering. The Major Archbishop then blessed the gathering with a golden crosier, a hooked staff symbolising pastoral office.

The decision to elevate the 70-year-old Mar Baselius as Major Archbishop was taken by Pope John Paul II in February last.

With his installation, the Syro-Malankara Church was simultaneously elevated to the status of Major Archiepiscopal Church. The elevation would give more autonomy in the conduct of the internal affairs of the Church, which follows Eastern traditions.

The Syro-Malankara Church (also known as Malankara Catholic Church) was born out of the re-union movement launched by Mar Ivanios of Bethany in the 1930s when a section of Syrian Christians in Kerala broke away from the parent Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church to join the Catholic Church.

The installation ceremony was preceded by a public procession, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy.
