Painting competition

PALAKKAD: The BSNL here will organise a painting competition for children under 15 years of age consisting of three groups in connection with the World Telecommunication Day celebrations on May 17.

Those who wish to participate are requested to reach Municipal Town Hall Annexe before 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday with brush and paint. Paper will be supplied at the venue. The Institution of Engineers (India), Palghat local centre and Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers will organise celebrations at Hotel Indraprastha Hall. A seminar on `Creating an equitable information society: time of action' will be organised as part of the celebrations. — Staff Reporter

Vocational training courses

KANNUR: The Bharath Sevak Samaj (BSS) has invited applications for admission to vocational training courses conducted by the BSS training centre at Iritty. A press release here on Saturday said the courses include nursing, medical lab technician, nursery teachers' training, electronics, air-condition and refrigeration electrical, beautician and fashion designing. Applicants should have passed the SSLC examination, it said. Those interested should contact the BSS training centre director, Chaithanya College Building, near Telephone Exchange, Nerampoke Road, Iritty, before May 30. Fisheries control room

KOZHIKODE: A round-the-clock control room will be opened at the Beypore Fisheries Station on Sunday. The Assistant Fisheries Director said information about accidents in sea could be passed on to the control room in person or on ph: 241 4074.

Boat owners have been advised to keep a record of the names and personal details of fishermen going to sea in their vessels. — Special Correspondent

Vision Kerala programme

KOZHIKODE: Vision Kerala 2020, a programme of the Department of Information and Public Relations, is being held in Kozhikode on Tuesday to mark the fourth anniversary of the United Democratic Front Government. The Minister for Health, K.K. Ramachandran, will inaugurate the event at the Town Hall.— Special Correspondent

Plea on building tax assessment

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Building Designers Organisation has asked the Government to allow the people to make assessment of the building tax by themselves. Kaudiar Harikumar, president, and Mahesh K. Pillai, secretary of the organisation, said here on Saturday that a proposal to that effect had come before the Government sometime ago, but it was shot down by the officials. They urged the Government to revive the proposal. They called for introducing a slab system of tax based on factors such as location, accessibility to main roads or byroads, age of the building and whether it was concrete, tiled or thatched. — Special Correspondent

Women's panel recommendation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Women's Commission has recommended the inclusion of a scheme in the Kerala Development Programme for the social and financial security of women abandoned by their husbands and children, and women who are the victims of harassment. The implementation of the scheme should be monitored at the district and grama panchayat level by the Jagratha Samithies. The role of these Samithies was to intervene in cases of harassment, disputes and marital problems among other things. — Special Correspondent

IUML office stoned

KOZHIKODE: The main office of the Indian Union Muslim League in Kozhikode was stoned when a procession of the Indian National League (INL) passed by it. Windowpanes and other parts of the building were damaged in the incident.- — Special Correspondent

Control room

KOLLAM: The control room for rescue operations at sea during monsoon will function round the clock from the Neendakara Fisheries Station, near here, from Sunday. In case of emergency, the control room can be contacted on telephone number 2680036, the assistant director at the fisheries station said in a statement.

Tsunami relief

KOLLAM: The District Library Council has contributed Rs. 60,000 towards tsunami relief. The amount was handed over to the District Collector, B. Sreenivas, by the council president, Puthur Somarajan, on Friday. The amount was collected from libraries in the district.

Church consecrated

PATHANAMTHITTA: The consecration of the newly built St. Behenan's Orthodox Church at Vazhamutom near here came to a close on Saturday. The Catholicos designate Thomas Mar Themotheos was the chief celebrant of the consecration service. Catholicos Moran Mor Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews-II and the Bishops Philipose Mar Eusebeus, Thomas Mar Athanaseus and Youhanon Mar Chrisostomos, participated.
