`Babli not to affect SRSP'

Staff Reporter

20 years of struggle behind the project

NIZAMABAD: The Babli Bandara Sangarsh Samithi, which spearheaded the movement for the construction of a barrage across the Godavari in Dharmabad taluq of Nanded district, has said the Babli barrage will not affect the future of Sri Ram Sagar Project and other projects under construction in the State.

Talking to visiting reporters at the barrage site on Friday, the Samithi chairman, Nagorao Jadav, said the proposal for construction of the barrage took shape after a 20-year.

Ruling out the State's argument that the project, if completed, would stock 5 tmcft of water, he clarified that it was just a barrage and would save not more than 2.75 tmcft of water.

The project costing an estimated Rs.92 crores was accorded sanction in 1995, he said adding that 200 villages in six taluqs of Nanded district would get drinking water if the project was completed. "Right now we are utilising only 250 tmcft of Godavari water. Still we have riparian rights over 60 tmcft. Even if we construct 12 barrages including Babli, we will not be in a position to totally utilise our share," he said. "Even if all these projects are constructed, Maharashtra can avail of only 59 tmcft of water leaving at least one tmcft from its share to Andhra Pradesh,'' Mr. Jadav argued.

The samithi general secretary, Balaji Kompalvar said: "We will not remain calm if the Opposition makes it a political issue. We will knock the door of the Supreme Court for justice.''
