NALGONDA: The Nalgonda district police busted a counterfeit currency racket with the arrest of seven persons belonging to Prakasam, Krishna and Guntur districts at Miryalaguda on Saturday.

The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat, told reporters that special teams were formed to nab the suspected kingpin of the gang, Nesa Rangababu of Kurnool. A computer, three mobile phones and fake currency of 100 and 500 denominations worth Rs.10,500 were recovered from the possession of the gang led by one Nandhyala Sekhar of Giddalur in Prakasam district.

Apart from Sekhar, the police arrested Manda Silveswar Rao alias Varma of Sattenaplli, T. Venkateswar Rao of Ponnur, Kunreddy Koti Reddy of Jangameswarapuram, V. Mallikharjun Rao of Dachepally, Cherukuri Hanumanta Rao of Vijayawada and M.E. Murali of Piduguralla. Murali had migrated to Piduguralla from Hattewada in Karnataka ten years ago.

Sekhar had allegedly brought the fake notes from one Eswar Reddy of Kurnool and teamed up with the other accused persons to circulate them in Nalgonda district.

Rangababu was said to have supplied notes to Eswar Reddy, who was arrested by the Kurnool police recently.

Earlier arrests

Interestingly, the same Rangababu was arrested by the Hyderabad police and Rs. one lakh worth fake currency notes were recovered from them while Mr. Bhagwat was working as the DCP (South Zone). He appealed to the people of Kurnool to give information on the whereabouts of Rangababu to the Nalgonda police. "The magnitude of the racket cannot be assessed till the arrest of the kingpin,'' the SP said.
