CHENNAI: : Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has directed the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation to intensify procurement of red chillies to help farmers affected by the fall in the price. In a statement on Saturday, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the TANFED would undertake further procurement until the end of this season at a reasonable price about Rs.2,300 a quintal for I-Sort (good quality) and Rs.1,900 for II-Sort (fair average quality) for the chamba variety. For the mundu variety, the price will range from Rs.1, 800 to Rs.2, 200. Ms. Jayalalithaa said she had also written to the Prime Minister, seeking inclusion of the scheme implemented by the TANFED under the Centre's market intervention scheme, under which the Centre provides 50 per cent of the loss incurred in the market intervention scheme. "I have requested that the Government of India meet 100 per cent of the loss. Pending revision of the guidelines of the market intervention scheme, I have requested the Prime Minister to include the procurement of red chillies in Tamil Nadu under the market intervention scheme," she said. She said it was brought to her notice that though the season was coming to an end and only the last pickings of shorter chillies were made, farmers had stocks, which they could not sell in the market.
