HYDERABAD: Despite heavy police presence in view of the "Rededication Day" of the Government, a group of physically challenged persons managed to sneak in and stage a dharna at the Rajiv Gandhi statue in Somajiguda, on Saturday, throwing traffic out of gear for nearly 30 minutes. Traffic coming from Begumpet and Raj Bhavan came to a halt as they refused to move out and raised slogans demanding house sites and job reservations apart from hike in monthly pension. The police rushed there and requested them to clear the road. As they refused to move out, the police resorted to mild lathicharge and then physically lifted them from the road. Y. Prakash Reddy, president of the State Disabled People Rights Protection Federation, said they had sat on a dharna demanding probe into the alleged misuse of funds in the department and other pending issues. He said the budgetary allocations were good but the money was not reaching the needy and sought action against the officials concerned. He asked the Government to constitute a committee of all disabled organisations to oversee the implementation of the Disabled Act of 1995 in letter and spirit. He requested the Government to establish residential schools in each district for them and also provide hostel facility at the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre at Vidyanagar. Other major demands include loans up to Rs. 1 lakh without surety and house sites to disabled in Qutubullapur and Balanagar mandals.
