'Congress, Left exploiting minority communities'

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Bharatiya Janata Minority Morcha national president, Tanvir Hyder Usmani, has said that the Congress and Left parties have been exploiting the minority communities, especially the Muslims, with the aim of creating a vote bank.

Inaugurating the State-level convention of the Morcha at Adhyapaka Bhavan on Saturday, Mr. Usmani called upon the Muslim community to improve its performance in the educational sector.

He pointed out that there was no concept of `sanyasa' in the Muslim community, but Muslims have to give equal importance to both religious as well as social work. Education was an important factor in becoming a good social being. But, unfortunately Muslim community was lagging behind in education, he said.

Mr. Usmani said that the Minority Morcha would organise a nation-wide campaign to promote education among members of the Muslim community. A nation-wide membership campaign too was being planned.

He claimed that as the BJP was aiming at the progress of the entire nation, this slogan would also include the progress of the minority communities. He condemned the stance adopted by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Kerala saying that the IUML was not motivated by any love for the community. He pointed out that extremist outfits like NDF were growing roots in Kerala and expressed concern over the alleged support provided by the Congress and Left parties to such outfits on many issues.

The BJP State president, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, who made the keynote address, said that the BJP State committee was ready to extend whole-hearted support to the efforts of the Minority Morcha to implement its national-level campaign among the minorities in Kerala. The BJP's foremost aim was to create citizens with patriotic fervour, he said.

The Morcha State president, Mathew Pailee, presided over the meeting. The all-India general secretary, George Kurien, the vice-president, A.K. Nazeer, and the State general secretary, Noushad T.O., also spoke. About 250 participants from all over the State took part in the convention.
