Foundation stone laid for houses for tsunami victims

KOCHI: The State Government will soon begin the second phase of rehabilitation of tsunami victims, the Minister for Fisheries, Dominic Presentation, has said.

Laying the foundation stone for the houses being built by the Ernakulam Merchants' Union for tsunami victims in Chellanam panchayat on Saturday, he said the second phase of rehabilitation would be in the form of proper infrastructure facilities.

Funds would be released for projects like maintenance of the Fort Kochi-Alappuzha coastal road. Steps would be taken to provide water and electricity connection to the houses constructed for rehabilitating tsunami victims, Mr. Presentation said.

The District Collector, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, presided. Mini Antony, Revenue Divisional Officer; Kusumam John, Chellanam panchayat president; V.B. Raghu, panchayat vice-president; Noor Mohammed Mather K.I., president of Ernakulam Merchants' Union, and K. Venkitesh Pai, general secretary, spoke.

The Union is building eight houses in 78 cents of land near the Chellanam village office. The houses are expected to be complete in a month's time. Each house is expected to cost around Rs. 2.35 lakhs.

There will be a slight increase in the cost of construction for projects taken up in Chellanam panchayat, as they are being built on land reclaimed from backwater and it involves piling and similar works to reinforce the land, said Mr. Mather.

The Christian Social Service Society is building another eight houses and the district administration is funding the construction of two houses for those who have land ready.
