Protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIR: The Chamber of Commerce has protested against the move to delink Attipara, Nemom and Thiruvallom panchayats from the City corporation. In a statement here, the Secretary of the Chamber said the Government should take the initiative to merge Vattiyorkavu, Kudapanakunnu and Vizhinjam panchayats with the City Corporation. — Staff Reporter

Prisoner dies

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIR: A 55-year-old remand prisoner of the Central Jail, Poojappura, died while undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital today. According to the Poojappura police, the deceased, Mohandas alias Mohan Kaimal, a resident of Manaloor, Anthikkad in Thrissur district, was undergoing treatment at the hospital from April 25. — Staff Reporter

Demand for drinking water project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIR: The Vypeen Kudivella Samara Samithy, a combine of people on Vypeen Island pressing for uninterrupted drinking water supply, set up a countdown board at the High Court Junction on Saturday ahead of the promised inauguration of the HUDCO drinking water project. The convener of the Samithy, T. C. Subramanyan, said in a press release that the countdown board was erected following a promise by the District Collector that the project would be inaugurated on July 12. — Staff Reporter

Renovated ward inauguration

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIR: The renovated casualty ward, the `panchakarma' section and a free treatment camp at the Thrikkakara grama panchayat Cooperative Hospital will be inaugurated on Monday. The inauguration, being organised at the Panchayat Community Hall, Thrikkakara, at 5.30 p. m. will be attended by K. Babu, MLA, and M.M. Monayee, president, District Cooperative Bank. S. Sarma, former Electricity Minister, will inaugurate the renovated casualty ward. — Staff Reporter

CME programme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIR: Vijaya Fertility Clinic will organise a Continuing Medical Education (CME)programme on Calposcopy, a technique used to detect any lesion in the cervix, on Sunday. Women above 35 are generally advised to undergo a cervical cytology as a preventive step against cancerous growths. The city-based oncologists, P.K. Padmanabhan, M. Fire at hotel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTHIR: A temporary structure erected for a marriage function on the premises of a hotel near Vyttila was destroyed in a fire on Saturday. No one was injured in the incident. Three fire tenders from Gandhi Nagar fire station led by R. Prasad, Assistant Divisional Officer, the fire under control. — Staff Reporter
