VIJAYAWADA: The city committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has threatened to launch an agitation, if the authorities of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation do not desist from their moves to install water meters to domestic drinking water connections. The party has demanded that the corporation authorities immediately withdraw the notices served on residents of different localities in third and 11th divisions asking them to install water meters. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the CPI (M) city secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, said that the corporation that failed to provide basic amenities like drinking water to people was trying to impose huge financial burden on them in the form of water meters. Moreover, ignoring the commercial complexes and other business establishments on the busy Bandar and Eluru roads, the corporation authorities took care to serve notices on the middle and lower middle class families, particularly those residing in the One Town area."The notices have been served in less than 24 hours after the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's announcement that efforts are underway to give 24-hour supply to all domestic consumers," he said adding that the officials were, however, "feigning ignorance" about the notices served on the residents. Recalling that the corporation's bylaws were against installation of water meters to domestic segment, he said that a proposal to this effect made earlier was opposed by all political parties. But, the enthusiasm of the officials in installing water meters reflected changes being brought in the policies for securing loans from the World Bank
