VIJAYAWADA: The urban unit of the Telugu Desam Party on Saturday took out a novel protest rally in the city and distributed pamphlets on the "many failures" of the ruling Congress Party. Wearing black cloaks, the TDP urban president, Gadde Rammohan, the general secretary, Nagul Meera, the vice-president, Katragadda Babu and others participated in the rally, which covered Lenin Centre, Besant Road and Bandar Road. Addressing street corner meetings, Mr. Rammohan and Mr. Meera said the Penukonda violence was the result of a deep-rooted conspiracy of the Congress leaders and the Anantapur police officials to create a fear psychosis among TDP cadres. It was a planned move on the part of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Panchayat Raj Minister, J.C. Diwakara Reddy, to spoil TDP chances to win the Penukonda by-election, they said. The TDP leaders demanded suspension of the Rayalaseema IG, R.P. Meena, and the Anantapur SP, Praveen Kumar, and wanted the Election Commissioner of India to depute central forces to provide security arrangements for conducting the Penukonda by-election in a fair manner.
