SALEM: The Centre has imposed safeguard duty on import of tapioca starch for three years from this month. A duty of 33 per cent has been imposed for the first year beginning May 2; 23 per cent for the second; and 13 for the third year. The existing duty of 30 per cent will be revised to 63 per cent, according to a Central Government release. This is the 15th commodity to be brought under the safeguard duty since 1997. Tapioca starch manufacturers in Salem, who contribute 90 per cent of the total production in the country, have been badly hit by imports from Thailand and Vietnam. About four lakh growers and 70,000 industrial and transport workers were affected.
