NAGAPATTINAM: More than 1.50 lakh children were administered polio drops in the second phase of the pulse polio programme in this district today. The district administration made special arrangements to give polio drops to the children in the tsunami-hit areas in all the 53 temporary shelters besides arranging mobile teams at several pilgrim and tourism centres like Velankanni, Nagore and Poompuhar. J. Radhakrishnan, Collector, along with a team of officials visited several places including Government Hospitals and Government orphanage at Kadambadi in Nagapattinam and administered polio drops. He said that over 4,000 persons including para medical staff from Government Hospitals, volunteers from various Non-Governmental and service organisations like Rotary and Lions Clubs were drafted to administer polio drops at 964 centres (893 centres in rural areas and 71 in urban places) including public places like bus stand, railway stations and places of worship.
Thanjavur
The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, today administered polio drops to children who arrived at the railway station here by Rockfort Express. Later, he told presspersons that it had been planned to administer polio drops to 2.74 lakh children today. For this purpose, 1,510 centres had been established. Polio drops were administered to children at all Primary Health Centres, Government Hospitals and special centres arranged at schools, community buildings, bus stands and railway stations. At Eripurakarai, a fishermen village in Pattukottai panchayat union, polio drops were administered at a centre put up at the cycolne centre. Tiruvarur Polio drops were administered to 1.30 lakh children in Tiruvarur district. The Collector, P.Ekambaram, inaugurated the programme by administering drops to children at a centre put up at the bus stand.
Pudukottai
Nearly three lakh children were administered polio drops in Pudukottai district today. Official sources said over 1.70 lakh children were administered the drops at 1,272 centres in Pudukottai district.
Perambalur
A total of 1.29 lakh infants were covered under pulse polio campaign at 849 centres in Perambalur district. The Collector, D. Vivekanandan, inaugurated the programme at Anukkur village near Veppanthattai. The Joint Director of Health Services, J. Jayakannan, said special camps were set up to administer the drops . Children who were left-out from today's campaign, would be covered during the door-to-door survey for the next couple of days, sources said.
