Right proposal

This refers to the news report, `Lahoti unveils plan for speedy disposal of cases' (May 13). Considering the number of pending cases, Chief Justice of India R.C. Lahoti's proposal for a Rs.670-crore computerisation plan is in the right direction. Also, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's proposal to curtail the number of court holidays can be considered. Implementation of computerisation may not be within the CJI's control but the latter is.

S. Chandran,
New Delhi

Justice Lahoti's concern is understandable. However, increasing the number of courts is no guarantee that the quality of justice will improve. Computerisation is also no guarantee for clearing the backlog.

Bijay Dash,
New Delhi
