Erode
Staff Reporter
ERODE: The Textile and Garment Exporters Association here would open a training centre in association with the National Institute of Fashion Technology. The centre would impart free training in pattern making, cutting of garments and sewing, the president and the secretary of the Association, V.P. Subramanian and S. Sivanandhen, have said.
Shortage of tailors
Talking to the press after the general body meeting of the Association on Sunday, Mr. Sivanandhen said that there was acute shortage of tailors in the garment export industry. Members of self-help groups who were provided free training by the garment exporters were reluctant to work in garment factories. So, the centre would absorb its trainees in the industries to enable garment manufacturers meet the requirement of export orders.
Apparel park
The Association resolved to open an apparel park on the National Highway between Perundurai and Chitode on a fifty-acre site, to house factories of about fifty garment exporters. If the park was established, the Ministry of Union Commerce and Industry would sanction at least Rs. 18 crores for infrastructure such as workers' rest room, dispensary, water, generator etc. The Association would conduct a buyer-seller meet in Tirupur mid-June, where all export garment manufacturers of Erode would display their products. As buyers decided on orders only in July, Mr. Sivanandhen hoped the turnout at the meet would be high.
