Adams wrests sole lead

CHENNAI: Englishman Michael Adams wrested the sole lead at the Mtel Masters chess tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, when he shocked the world classical champion, Russian Vladimir Kramnik, in 41 moves playing with white pieces, according to information received here.

Meanwhile, Indian Viswanathan Anand, the top seed, repeated the position against Ukranian Ruslan Ponomariov to draw his third straight game.

Adams now has two points from three games, while Anand, Judit Polgar, Veselin Topalov and Kramnik are in joint second with 1.5. Ponomariov, with one point, is last.

The results (third round): Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 1.5 drew with Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) 1, Judit Polgar (Hun) 1.5 drew with Veselin Topalov (Bul) 1.5, Michael Adams (Eng) 2 bt. Vladimir Kramnik (Rus) 1.5.
