Teachers seek parity in DA with Central staff

CHENNAI: The Association of University Teachers, Tamil Nadu, has asked the Government to sanction 3 per cent dearness allowance (DA) for all Government employees and employees of aided institutions from January, on a par with Central Government employees.

The Government should also pass orders merging 50 per cent of the DA with basic pay from April 1, as has been done for Central employees, one of the resolutions adopted by the AUT central executive committee at its meeting here on Sunday said.

Referring to the State Government's recent announcement of filling up 300 vacancies in aided colleges out of an existing 2,300 vacancies, the AUT wanted it to fill up all vacancies. The 300 vacancies must be filled up before colleges reopened.

The Government and the universities should not allow aided colleges to close down existing aided courses or convert them into unaided courses as this would affect the prospects of socially and economically backward students. Also, the Director of Collegiate Education should monitor aided colleges to prevent collection of funds from students under the guise of building fund, development fee, maintenance fees or alumni fee.
