MYSORE: The Karnataka Communal Harmony Forum is observing the 206th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan in Mangalore on May 26. C.N. Shetty, president of the Reception Committee of Patriot Tipu Sultan Harmony Convention, told presspersons here on Friday that the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district committees of the Forum have decided to observe Tipu Sultan's death anniversary in Mangalore to check the spread of communalism by Sangh Parivar elements in coastal Karnataka.
Convention
Over 15,000 people will meet at Bavutagudda Maidan in Mangalore at 2.30 pm on May 26. A rally will be taken out from the Maidan to the Town Hall, where a communal harmony convention will be held at 4 p.m. Artistes, poets, writers, advocates, professors, thinkers and others representing different organisations will be participating in the meet. The participants will take a pledge to protect communal harmony and expose the "evil" designs of communal forces, Mr. Shetty said. Recalling Tipu Sultan's courageous assault on the British during the end of the 18th Century, Mr. Shetty said the fear Tipu had instilled in the minds of the British returns to grip the "present-day imperialists" whenever an event is organised in the late warrior king's memory.
`False propaganda'
Lashing out at Sangh Parivar's false propaganda against Tipu Sultan, Mr. Shetty said efforts have been continuously made to distort the history relating to Tipu Sultan, first by the British and later by the Hindu fundamentalists. He accused the Sangh Parivar of carrying out a vilification campaign against the minority Muslims and Christians with a view to instigate communal violence. "The participants at the convention will take an oath to protect the communal harmony of the region," Mr. Shetty said. Lingadevaru Halemanu, litterateur, said a large number of people from different parts of the State will participate in the event. Mahanta Swamiji of Salimath in Raichur; Sri Basavaraja Devaru of Revanna Sidheshwara Mutt; Gauri Lankesh, journalist; V.S. Sridhar of Vijaya College in Bangalore; H.KL. Keshavamurthy, thinker; Chukki Nanjundaswamy of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha; and Mavalli Shanker, Dalit Sangharsha Samiti Convenor, will participate in the convention.
