Pulse Polio campaign begins

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The scourge of polio will be eliminated from the State by 2007, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Cheluvarayaswamy, said here on Sunday.

He was speaking to presspersons after inaugurating this year's second phase of the Pulse Polio campaign by administering polio drops to a child at a government maternity home at V.V. Puram here. The State met the target during the first phase of the programme held on April 10 by administering polio drops to 72.4 lakh children, he said.

Claiming that the drive against polio will continue for two more years by when the entire the State will be free from polio, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said not a single case of polio has been detected in the past two years in the State.

Over 225 polio booths were set up in different parts of the city on Sunday to administer polio drops to children below five years. Volunteers were seen administering polio drops at different places in the city including bus stands, railway station and the zoo.

Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said the Head of the Department of Surgery at K.R. Hospital, Dr. Satyanarayana, has been suspended after an inquiry found prima facie evidence against him for demanding bribe and delaying a surgery, which led to the death of a patient recently. To put an end to such instances, the Health Minister said officials will pay surprise visits to government hospitals. When asked about the shortage of staff at K.R. Hospital, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said the Government will look into the matter. "I did not know that the Resident Medical Officer's quarters in the hospital houses a police station," he remarked. The Mayor, Dakshinamurthy; the Mysore Zilla Panchayat President, K.C. Balaram; the MLA G.T. Deve Gowda; the Mysore City Corporation Commissioner, A.B. Ibrahim; and the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Niranjan, were present.
